When it comes to dog movies, Walt Disney seems to win hands dog.  They make more dog movies than anyone else and they make good dog movies.  They’ve been making them for decades.  It was not always so.  In the early days of the movie industry Warner Brothers had the top canine film star with Rin Tin Tin.

Some of the earliest film starts during the silent movie era were dogs.  One of these was the German Shepherd Dog Strongheart.  He was the first German Shepherd to star in the movies.  He made his first film in 1921.  His most well-known film was probably White Fang ini 1925.

There were other canine stars of that era:  Teddy, a Great Dane; Jean, the Vitagraph dog who was a Collie; Luke, a Pit Bull, and many others.  In the 1920s other canine stars appeared:  Rin Tin Tin, Peter, Lightning, Flame, Champion, Ranger, Flash and Leader.  These dogs were all German Shepherd Dogs.  They are mostly forgotten today.

Fortunately, Hollywood does continue to make films about dogs even if we don’t always know the real names of the stars.
