There’s no end to the names you can come up with for your male dog. Look around you. See what’s important in your life and then think of something that would fit your dog. Is there something that stands out about him? Does his face make him special? Is his coat unique? Is he very large or very small? Is he extremely smart -- or not? Consider the things that make you love him and go from there.
You’re probably just getting your new puppy or dog since you are trying to find a name for him so you may not know him very well yet. That’s okay. Often dogs have a way of choosing their own name. Look in his eyes. What’s he telling you about himself? How does he act? Does he act like a big boss dog? Or, does he act like a clown? If he’s a clown then you probably shouldn’t give him a name like Brutus because he’ll never fit the name.
Choose a name that seems to fit your dog’s personality. Pick out several names that you like and try them on your dog for size. See what he seems to like. Does he respond to any of them? Of course he won’t “know” them yet but does he seem to like any of them? Do you get a good feeling about any of them? Sometimes a name will seem to fit.
When you choose a name for your dog you should also think of possibly diminutives. How will the name sound when it’s shortened? if you name your dog Alexander the Great, for instance, do you like Alex? Or Al? Because it’s unlikely that you’ll go around calling your dog Alexander the Great when you’re at home together.
Once you decide on a name you and your dog should live with it a few days and make sure that you like it. You can always change it if you decide you don’t like it.
If you’re getting an older dog who already has a name it’s all right to change his name, especially if he has some negative baggage associated with his past. If your dog is coming from an abusive situation and he’s starting a new life with you, go ahead and give him a new name so he can start fresh. It won’t take him long to get used to his new name and he can put the past behind him.
Choosing a name for your dog is a personal experience. People have very definite likes and dislikes when it comes to naming a pet. The choice is between you and your dog. You don’t have to rush into choosing a name. Take your time and pick something that both you and your dog like. Consider carefully before giving your dog an embarrassing name. You and your dog may be together for 15 years. Do you really want to call him Stinky for 15 years? Be kind. Give him a name he can be proud of. Afterall, you may have a middle name that you don’t like. Do you like for people to use it? Think how your dog will feel if you give him an embarrassing name.
Choose a good name for your dog and show people that you’re proud of him. Be creative. Then you and your dog can both enjoy his name.
If your dog comes from a particular heritage you may want to draw on that background for a name. Laddie and Lassie are good choices for a dog of Scottish descent.
It’s often a good idea to wait until your dog has been in your home for a few days before you choose a permanent name.
The American Kennel Club currently registers 173 breeds and varieties in the United States. In the world there are over 400 purebred breeds of dog, some of them breeds which have been rescued from near-extinction.
Socialization is vital because your best friend will be going everywhere with you and you want him to be accepted by humans and animals alike.
The first dog tax or licensing law dates to Schweinfurt, Germany in 1598.
